The plot centers around the wealthy widow, Hanna Glawari, and the various suitors who vie for her affections and her fortune. The action takes place in the imaginary Parisian-style Pontevedrian embassy in Paris and follows the antics of the embassy officials as they attempt to keep the wealthy widow from marrying a foreign suitor and thereby transferring her fortune out of the country. The operetta features a mix of humor, romance, and cultural satire, set to Lehár’s iconic musical score.
